A Little About Oceanside, Nassau County

Today an affluent hamlet that helps make up the wider Town of Hempstead, Oceanside used to be spelled with two words — and that’s after having been “Oceanville” for a few years, sharing the same name as another New York community for almost three decades.

But that’s ancient history, from well over a century ago.  Relatively more recently, Oceanside was the one-time residence of Polish-American actress and Ziegfeld dancer Gilda Gray, often credited with creating “The Shimmy.”  Oceanside also hosted the second-ever Nathan’s Famous hot dog restaurant, one that featured play areas for children and a stage for family events.  The other great claim to fame was Saint Anthony of Padua, which had an underground chapel that reportedly received up to ten thousand pilgrims every weekend!

Residents are still served by a wonderful hospital and one of Long Island’s best school districts.  And true to its name, Oceanside is close to the water, but many areas are far away enough to mitigate most flooding concerns!
