A Little About Marine Park, Brooklyn
Named after the eponymous public space which dominates its geography, Marine Park in Brooklyn is a middle-class neighborhood with a strong Irish Catholic ambiance, most proudly on display during holidays and public events. Like surrounding communities, the area was originally a swamp that got developed as a result of since-abandoned plans for industrializing nearby Jamaica Bay, though in a slightly ironic round-about manner: fearing the destruction of then-pristine marshlands, civic luminaries acquired 150 acres of property to offer to the city, but real estate speculators, inspired by the coming park, erected houses in anticipation of a profitable population boom.
Yet it was also ironic that the park developed slowly, taking sixty years to offer the modest amenities found today, and so it’s arguable that its founders’ original conservation goals have been largely met after all — a golf course and a model airplane facility are the only features anywhere near a luxury around; ball fields and playgrounds are thankfully common enough delights of comparably-sized venues throughout the city. Much if not most of the park remains reeds and mud, broken by a few patches of rocky beach. A municipal boat launch is not far from the beautiful new Nature Center for visitors, and nature trails abound.
The rest of Marine Park the neighborhood consists of modest two-story family homes, attached, detached, and semi-attached with modest driveways and backyard storage garages along quiet tree-lined blocks. It’s a bedroom community served by local schools and churches. In other words, it’s a Brooklyn nabe! Nothin’ too fancy, but all right all the same.
