A Little About Douglaston, Queens
By many reckonings, Queens County is the most diverse place on the planet, but in our estimation it’s also architecturally diverse, and especially so considering how skyscrapers on its western borders are balanced out by bucolic homes along its eastern edges. Douglaston belongs to this latter sort of Queens, with an undeniably suburban atmosphere that has never ceased to attract house-hunters. Speaking of diversity, there’s a cornucopia of locales within Douglaston: Douglas Manor, Douglas Bay, Douglaston Park, Winchester Estates, Douglaston Hill, and, believe it or not, Douglaston. As in the unused but technically correct “Douglaston, Douglaston.” Hmmm, where have we New Yorkers heard of such a double appellation before?
The biggest local draw for outsiders, however, must surely be nearby Alley Pond Park, to the west, especially now that it’s been upgraded with a unique quarter-of-a-million-dollar Adventure Course for all ages, offering fun intellectual as well as physical challenges for individuals and groups of all ages. It’s one of the largest such preciously few facilities in the entire country — arguably the most advanced, even — with activities that involve jumping off from forty-foot heights, zipping down an aerial ropeslide, and walking across a high wire. Too bad it’s only open to the public on Sundays! The rest of the week it’s available exclusively for rent to groups like schools, non-profits, and corporations.
